Dear Prospective Troop 91 Parents:

Scouting is an excellent program and is one that doesn’t stop after Cub Scouts. Selecting and joining a Boy Scout troop is the next step. You and your son still have many more exciting experiences to share and adventures to undertake. In Boy Scouts your son will learn important values and undertake adventures he will never forget. You will be looking at various troops around your area and deciding which one will best fit your son. I am writing to you today so you can understand one of your options is Troop 91.

I have been involved in scouting ever since I was a Tiger Cub in Pack 91 and bridged over into Troop 91 in 1998. I feel that choosing Troop 91 as a place to continue my scouting experiences was the best decision I have ever made. During the past seven years I have the chance to do things I would never have had anywhere else. I have been involved in the leadership and the decision-making of the troop even as a young Boy Scout. When I first joined the troop I was elected Assistant Patrol Leader and preceded up the chain to where I am now – Junior Assistant Scoutmaster – and have enjoyed every minute of it. Troop 91 has taught me to be a leader. Troop 91 is a boy-run troop. As a scout I had the chance to plan trips, run meetings and to even lead a crew of 15 scouts and parents on a week-long backpacking trek in VA.

I have had the chance to undertake many exciting experiences with my fellow scouts that range from a backpacking trip in New Mexico to a canoe trip in Canada. As a scout in Troop 91 we try to go on a troop activity at least once a month. During the summer we go to summer camp and then go on a high adventure, once-in-a-lifetime outing, like canoeing in Canada. Our outings are designed so our number one goal is to have fun. No scout or scout leader has ever gone on an outing that wasn’t fun. At the beginning of every school year, all the scouts and scout leaders plan the activities for each year – activities that are not only safe but are things we want to do. We are always out there trying new things like canoeing, backpacking, horseback riding, skiing, spelunking, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing and many more activities.

With all these fun trips planned every month, parents might be thinking about money. Our troop manages to keep costs that you have to pay at a minimum. Entering Boy Scouts can be an expensive time with all the gear you need to buy and the trip costs adding up, but we are trying to make it as easy for you as we can. As a new Boy Scout we ask that you buy only a sleeping bag and the Troop has the rest of the gear. Troop 91 is the best-supplied troop in the area. We have brand new Eureka Apex Tents, enough for all the new scouts for the first year. We have top-of-the-line cooking equipment. But most of all, we have the equipment that we need to have fun. We are the only troop around with enough canoes for our whole troop and we are also the only troop with a climbing wall. Over the past year we had to retire our old climbing wall and replace it with a brand new 20-foot wall. This is something of which we are very proud. With all this gear it still comes back to money. We have only one fundraiser for the whole year and that involves only one weekend. Troop 91 works at the Renaissance Festival during the fall, manning the beverage booths. The Scouts don’t even consider it to be work!

I have enjoyed Scouting and Troop 91 more than words can describe. I have learned a lot from Scouts. I can only hope you will let Troop 91 give your son the same chances they gave me. I can’t begin to tell you how much scouting changes peoples lives for the better.

Sincerely,
Greg Hintz (Eagle Scout)
