Dear Prospective Troop 91 Parents: |
| |
|
Scouting
is an amazing opportunity in which boys around the
nation can participate. After receiving his Arrow of
Light award from Cub Scouts, a young man wanting to
continue his scouting career has to decide which Boy
Scout Troop suits him best. You and your son have many
adventures yet to be undertaken during his path to
adulthood. Boy Scouts will develop him morally while
exposing him to a great group of friends and a wide
variety of exciting experiences. During your search for
a troop, be sure to keep your son's best interest as a
prime consideration. We have prepared this description
so that you understand Troop 91 is one of your many
options. |

Scouting has
been a part of our lives ever since we joined Pack 91 in
2000 as Tiger Scouts. In 2005, we bridged over to Troop
91, a choice that we took for granted. Over the years we
have come to appreciate that choice. Troop 91 gave us
opportunities that no other group could match. Even as
younger members, scouts can aid in the leading of the
troop with positions of authority. For instance, we have
served in positions such as Troop Guide, Assistant
Patrol Leader, and Quartermaster. Eventually, we worked
our way up to our current titles, Senior Patrol Leader,
the highest position a scout can hold, and Assistant
Senior Patrol Leader, directly under the SPL. The adult
leaders of the troop work with us, just as they do with
every other scout, to develop our leadership skills,
which we know will help us later on in life. Troop 91 is
scout-run. We as Scouts in Troop 91 play an active role
in running the meetings, planning the various exciting
and sometimes exotic outings, and making sure to have
great fun together. |

As a Troop,
we try to schedule at least one trip per month. In the
past, the Troop has been around the continent, canoeing
in Canada, and trekking in the mountains of New Mexico.
The influx of newer Scouts has limited the trips to
closer to home, but we still have fun. Every summer, the
Troop attends a week-long summer camp, offering Scouts
the opportunity to earn merit badges. Other examples of
outings we have taken personally include caving trips,
whitewater rafting/kayaking weekends, and overnight
hikes in the Appalachians. Everything is designed so
that all have a lot of fun. Each August, the Scouts in
the Troop gather to schedule for the upcoming year, so
that the Troop ends up going where the Scouts themselves
choose to go. This ensures that fun is the priority, and
we keep safety right behind it. Trying new things is not
unheard of; rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing,
horseback riding, scuba diving, boating and fishing,
spelunking, backpacking, skiing, and even braving a
park-full of roller coasters after camping on theme park
grounds help fill our arsenal for fun. |

Thinking
about all these trips every month or so may remind you
that everything costs money. Our troop works so that the
cost to the scouts and their families is minimized as
much as possible. You may hear that entering Boy Scouts
is an expensive endeavor, buying all the gear your son
may need and paying for all the outings, but our Troop
minimizes this as much as possible. We ask that new
scouts provide their own sleeping bag and personal
equipment. The Troop will supply them with all other
necessities. T91 is one of the best-equipped Troops in
the district. We recently purchased new Eureka tents for
use by the new Scouts during their first year. We have
the equipment needed to have fun safely. We are one of
very few troops in the state to have enough canoes for
all the scouts, and to have a 20-foot climbing wall. It
may seem like we are made of money, but we aren't. We
have a major fund raising event once a year. The
fundraiser is hosted by the Friends and Families of
Troop 91. It is a two-day event requiring a large
turnout, but it provides the Troop with sufficient funds
to operate and maintain the Troop for the year. Using
this fundraiser and with careful planning we have been
able to acquire and maintain our capitol equipment. The
result is that we spend more time camping and growing
and having fun as Scouts of Troop 91. |

Troop 91 has
affected our lives for the better. We've learned a great
deal. We hope you will allow us, along with our fellow
Scouts, to enrich your son's life as the Troop has ours. |
